Effective use of light provides contrast, colour and perspective which in my opinion is best achieved in watercolour. I also work in acrylic and pastels, continually attempting to demonstrate colour and light in that same perspective. Becoming a teacher and later a mother put my passion in abeyance for about 20 years. In 1988, I was given the opportunity to rekindle my passion when I met the British expatriate artist Robert Percival. Mr. Percival had previously studied in the United Kingdom and France. After he came to Canada, he served as art curator for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and later as curator of the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, New Brunswick before returning full-time to his vocation of a professional artist and teacher. Living in the Canadian Maritime Provinces, I have a great appreciation for a never ending source of subject matters. The Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Fundy and their shorelines, quaint fishing villages, boats and wharves, our inland river systems, our four seasons and our 400 years of history provide an endless visual tapestry. My home and birthplace, Saint John, is a major part of Canada’s history. Many of its’ buildings have been recognized as National Historic Sites. Many others deserve similar recognition. I continue to paint on a daily basis. I continue to exhibit my work in galleries. In addition to the joy of painting, I feel a great deal of pride when others appreciate my work whether it be by purchase or personal compliment. The joy, pride and accomplishment of seeing my work displayed in personal collections, galleries, businesses and public buildings is both rewarding and satisfying to me as a visual artist. Letter of Recommendation from Kathryn McCarroll, October 13, 2006 Re:Charlene Barry To Whom It May Concern: It is with pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Charlene Barry. For the past two years the Saint John Arts Centre has employed Charlene as an instructor in watercolour techniques. Her workshops are always full of the moment that they are advertised because she brings such joy and enthusiasm to each session. Participants enjoy her easy, encouraging manner and value her knowledge of watercolour technique. The resulting work from her classes is a testament to her skill as a teacher. Charlene is a great supporter of Saint John Arts Centre. Her innovative ideas bring vibrancy and life to our building. She is a valuable member of our artistic community. Sincerely,
Kathryn McCarroll |
